Invitation to the launch of the Open Society Monitoring Index (OSMI)
12 August 2010
Open Society Foundation for South Africa (OSF-SA)
Venue: Centre for African Studies Gallery, Oppenheimer Building Upper Campus, University of Cape Town
Contact person: Kim Benjamin

The Open Society Foundation for South Africa (OSF-SA) in line with its commitment to promoting values, institutions and practises of an open society is supporting the development of an Open Society Monitoring Index (OSMI) in South Africa. The OSMI is a tool aimed at monitoring our constitutional democracy in South Africa, with a focus on (1) the free flow of information; (2) inclusive, accountable and responsive government institutions; and (3) adherence to the rule of law.

Measuring South Africa’s progress toward creating a truly open society is essential not simply as a way of gauging its success in putting democratic principles into practice, but a way of assessing the country’s ability to realise its transformative social aims through public policies informed by accurate information, responsive governance and reasoned debate.

Please join us in a public event as we assess South Africa’s commitment in laying the "foundations for a democratic and open society in which government is based on the will of the people and every citizen is equally protected by law", as espoused by the South African Constitution.

Welcome and introduction: Zohra Dawood - Executive Director of the Open Society Foundation for South Africa
Panel chair: Archbishop Thabo Makgoba - Anglican Church of Southern Africa
Dr Mamphela Ramphele - Executive Chair of Circle Capital Ventures; former VP of the World Bank; and Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Town
