28 August 2008
Leadership

Abuja: Federation of Muslims Women Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN), has suggested stiffer penalties against public officials convicted of corruption. The federation said yesterday in a Communiqué after its 23rd meeting in Sokoto, that such was "very necessary" to check the trend. The communique signed by Hajiya Sadia Omar, FOMWAN Zonal Coordinator, North-West, stated that hard measures would ensure a "more judicious management of public funds".

It also called for the revival of the strong moral principles the Sokoto Caliphate was known for to ensure societal regeneration.

"Everything must be done to promote social justice, transparency and accountability in all tiers of the nation's leadership," the women said.

FOMWAN also called on government to expedite action in providing more foodstuff in the market as the fasting period was fast approaching. The communiqué also suggested that government should invest in education through adequate budgetary allocation as recommended by UNESCO. It also called for a functional primary healthcare service, noting that such waskey to improving maternal and child health in the country.
