ANSA-Africa Full Circle Newsletter: July 2007
|
What do spiders have in common with ANSA-Africa? Yonas Yohannes Abreham of Addis Ababa pointed out to us last month that there is one strong similarity between the two. He wrote that the naming of this monthly newsletter, Full Circle, "is synonymous to the ultimate aim of the spider in designing and making her amazing, delicate but strong threads of circles to catch her prey. In Ethiopia we have a local proverb: When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion."
Uniting the strength of your efforts across Africa is exactly what ANSA-Africa aims to do. Please let us know what initiatives you are weaving in your community or country, and unite your efforts within this network to everybody's benefit.
The ANSA-Africa website is your platform for passing on the latest news about social accountability developments in your country or community. We invite you to send us announcements about new projects or training opportunities you are developing. You will receive full credit and acknowledgement for your organisation's efforts. All we want to do is let others in Africa know what you are doing, so you can combine to "tie up the lion".
We're also happy to hear what your needs and expectations are for social accountability in Africa. As a part of the ANSA network, your contribution is valuable and necessary. Please pass this letter on to other people you know who share this interest - and please forward their contact details to us so we can send them information on ANSA-Africa. And if you ever need to have your name removed from our distribution list, please send an email requesting to unsubscribe to .

ANSA-Africa established contacts in Nairobi for developing a local government empowerment project in Kenya. Dr Mbithi wa Kivilu, the director of the Survey Section of the Human Science Research Council in Pretoria, held discussions with World Bank representatives in Nairobi and the search is now on for a suitable agent in the World Bank to help take this project forward with local representatives.

The World Bank has asked ANSA-Africa to help identify presenters for the Ethiopian Social Accountability Knowledge event that is taking place in Addis Ababa on July 17-18, 2007. The event aims to raise the profile, popular knowledge and understanding of the social accountability agenda of the Protection of Basic Services programme within Ethiopia; learn from international (primarily African) experience on transparency and social accountability, by drawing in experts who can share knowledge and experience of best practices; and act as a high-profile launching pad for the grant-making work of the management agent. ANSA-Africa representatives will be at the event and if you are there, they would be happy to meet you.

From this week the ANSA-Africa website home page will feature three declarations on governance, all from conferences in the first half of July: The Accra Declaration of the African Union; the Vienna Declaration from the UN Conference on Reinventing Government; and the Geneva Declaration from the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit. These declarations give a glimpse into the direction of governance and social accountability around the world.

The ANSA-Africa scoping study has been launched with the name ASAP: Africa's Social Accountability Profile. The pilot phase will focus on seven countries - Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Senegal, Togo and Egypt - and will be completed by September, when the findings will be analysed and another 12 countries will be selected for review. Your input will aid this process, so please send us information on what social accountability initiatives are in place in your country and who you are working with. Regular updates on strategy and projects will be posted on the website.

The Secretariat is seeking a networking specialist, who will spend a good deal of time making contact with people across Africa. Meanwhile, if you have information to add to the network, please would you forward it to us by email to: .

The ANSA-Africa programme of seminars will launch shortly. This series will be held every two months, on topical issues that will gather together expertise from all across Africa, using the World Bank's distant learning facilities. If you have suggestions on topics and/or speakers, please let us know. Your participation is vital in making these seminars relevant and effective.
-
The ANSA-Africa board will select a project to fund from the applications we received last month.

We expect the ANSA-Africa network to grow and strengthen as people like you take the time to share from your own experiences in social accountability - both good and bad. Please contact us, by email or by registering on the website, to let us know what your concerns are for your own community, what social accountability initiatives you have undertaken, and what new initiatives you would like to introduce. Again, you can email us at: .
We look forward to hearing from you.
Yours for the growth of social accountability,
The ANSA-Africa Team
