Resolutions during the regional civil society forum on elections, human rights and democratic transformation in Africa

We the Civil Society Actors-Practitioners and Scholars from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, South Africa, Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria and Zimbabwe,
Convening under the aegis of the Regional Civil Society in Africa on Elections, Human Rights and Democratic Transformation in Africa on the 25th-26th September 2007, at the Panafric hotel in Nairobi, Kenya,
Noting the Progressive milestones realized by the African Counties’ State and non-state actors in the struggle for accountable governance of political and democratic processes,
Aware of the related social, political, legal and economic contexts, experiences and interventions on human rights, elections and democracy in Africa,
Concerned about the challenges facing the African states in entrenching and safeguarding democratic transformation which includes but not limited to negative HIV/ Aids, negative ethnicity, corruption, poverty and inequality; political dictatorship and repression(both civilian and military), violence, manipulation, fraud; non-compliance with the regional and international human rights obligations and accountabilities; inadequate legal and institutional frameworks, limited observation of electoral processes; non issues based organizing of political parties; schewed networking and institutional gaps within the civil society; episodic/ event-based interventions in electoral and political processes; patriarchy, ineffective representation of women and gender based injustices especially impunity and violations directed women among others,
Acknowledging our obligation (the civil society) as the vanguards of human rights, social justice, governance and democracy agenda at all the levels in the society,
Do hereby reaffirm our commitment to work towards Democratic Transformation and or Substantive Democracy in the Society.
